Summary of this Book...
A couple of days in the life of Holden Caulfied, heading home early for Christmas vacation. His first holiday task is to inform his parents he'll need to go to ANOTHER school, again, after the holidays.

Holden fills three days of his life, drifting around NYC. More amazing is the mental trip he takes at the same time.
This type of Book is good for...
EVERYONE (13+) who reads. It is novel which remains in our schools and is in the news often. Not everyone will like it but EVERYBODY must read. It is amazing how many corny cliches are related to The Catcher in the Rye.
I especially liked...
a conversation which takes place in the study of a former teacher. Mr. Antolini tries to make Holden aware of the downside of Holden's acting out. The dialogue is great and I feel the passion in Antolini's voice, begging Holden to open his eyes to his life. He pleas for Holden to stop hating things.
I didn't like...
the overuse of the words: madman, ol', old, goddam.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
pick up a red pen and begin editing.
This Book made me feel...
perplexed. I enjoyed the storyline. I made a connection with Holden but the writing style of Salinger drove me crazy.
The author of this Book...
did not do justice to the FABULOUS story.
I recommend this Book because...
it is a Classic. For no other reason, read it to be able to answer questions on Jeopardy. You'll be surprised how often one hears references from this book.
Further Comments...
I admit it, I read the book out of curiousity. I felt it was about time I see why it is often associated with the whackydoos in the world.

I'm glad I read it. I can't say I enjoyed reading it. I won't promise not to read it again with my red pen in hand.

Holden's story, is fabulous. His physicals adventures are due to his mental attitude OR is it the other way around?

Storyline? Wonderful. Characters? Incredible. Words used to tell the story? They annoyed me. How can I like the characters if the writing was poor? I created the people in my mind. I saw what Salinger wanted me to but I argue there were better words to tell the story.

This is only one person's opinion.
