While some would argue that "Once Upon A Time" is Simple Minds most polished and accomplished release to date, "New Gold Dream" is the album that true fans cherish. Where flashes of brilliance had appeared on the earlier Sons & Fascination album, NGD represents the band firing on all cylinders. This was the release that showcased their ability to imbue songs with an otherworldly cast and an ethereal feeling. As shown by the crucifix that adorns the album cover, the group had a definite spiritual message they wanted to get across- but it is done in such a way that one doesn't get the feeling they are being preached to as much as invited to seek out and revel in the beauty this world has to offer- a beauty that is found in words and thoughts, feelings and music- a beauty that comes not from man, but is inspired by the Divine.
For anyone seeking an introduction to the band's work, this is the place to start.
