Here's a tip that might help you hear your writing as well as proofread it.

I have a little program called TextAloud (NextUp.com). You can copy your work into it and have it read back to you by your computer. I recommend getting the ATT Natural Voices offered with it. They're much better than the stock voices.

TextAloud costs under $75. It is a simple, basic text-to-speech program that has evolved into a necessary writing tool for me.

You'll be startled by what you catch, refine or change when proofing your work with both your eyes and your ears, adding a new dimension to the painful editing process. I run it side by side with my word processor, pausing the read back when I want to change something in the word processor.
