It's supposed to be a love story, a story of love after death. I couldn't get past wanting to see more of the afterlife. I was so caught up in waiting for an adventure in the afterlife, in fact, that the love story was a little bit of a nuisance. That's not necessarily a bad thing. That was just my hang-up, but I still really enjoyed the book. Any book that starts you out with the knowledge that the narrator is dead is enough to make me shove my nose further in the pages.

The fact that Matheson got the details of Heaven and Hell from research, not fancy. This knowledge, however, is partly responsible for me wanting to see more of the afterlife than the love story.

The concept that the main character and his wife were soul mates. The definition of soul mates herein made me feel a little better about it, but it still didn't sit well with me.

So much research went into it, yet Matheson put fictional characters in this setting. I'm not sure I like that, but I think it's interesting no matter how you look at it. I think some people will really love it.
