Summary of this DVD... | ||
A slice of Dickensian life. The various characters - so different on the surface - all have some connection with the river and the mystery of John Harmon. As the tale progresses, the lives of these characters become more and more intertwined...
This type of DVD is good for...
People who enjoyed the book, and people who want an introduction to the world of Charles Dickens' writing.
I especially liked... | ||
The skilful adaptaition - really captured the spirit of the original. The locations were well chosen and the costumes were (mostly) accurate. The language is appropriate and still easy to understand.
I didn't like... | ||
One or two characters were left out, or left undeveloped. Understandable - it's already 6 hours long! Miss Peacher is only glimpsed, and the Pubsey & Co storyline left out completely.
When I finished viewing this DVD I wanted to...
Watch it again/read the book.
This DVD made me feel...
Really caught up in the piece, involved with the characters. It made me laugh and cry by turns.
The cast of this DVD... | ||
Is just about perfect. I especially liked Paul McGann as Eugene Wrayburn. He really captured the spirit of the indolent young barister, and made a very believable foil to the characters of Lizzie, Mortimer and Bradley Headstone. Bradley Headstone himself is perfect - dignified, obsessive and thoroughly terrifying.
I recommend this DVD because...
It is a brilliant adaptation, and divided into episodes so that it is easy to spread the 6 hours of film over several evenings.
I don't recommend this DVD because...
It is very long - and 6pm becomes midnight before you know it. Beware watching it the night before a busy day!
Further Comments... | ||
I started watching this with some trepidation, because I really liked the book and thought that I might be disappointed. But I needn't have worried - it was brilliant.
