Further Comments... | ||
Struggle through about the first 50 pages of mostly character introduction and you'll be rewarded with a luscious tapestry of character development with rich threads of allusion. It's easy to care about some of these characters, wonder about some, and to reasonably dislike others. For me, the book was worth the price, and worth rereading, for this middle section. The tension builds wonderfully for the climax. Unfortunately, though the seeds of the climax are presented earlier, it is not as well woven into the tapestry and doesn't connect with the title character enough to feel satisfactory. This book is not for someone looking for escape fiction. It exposes the reality of life with it's lack of connections and unpredictability. We see how each of us lives in our own world. We are unquestionably affected by the world outside and things we can't control, but we never really know what we think we know about someone else and his world. | ||
