Summary of this Book...
The main character, a playwright and free-lance writer, receives a message granting him an interview with God. Although he is skeptical at first, he goes and has a talk with God, who speaks to him through an intercom machine. The basic message is to tell the world that God is not dead or irrelevant; He is alive and watching. Also is the message that humans have everything to make civilization work, but they can't rely on God to do things for them. The guy goes and publishes his interview, and although he isn't believed at first, the story slowly picks up momentum, culminating in a giant, multi-faith conference to decide whether or not a miracle really has occured. The story is a humorous, yet thought-provoking commentary on God. (NOTE: although the product rating is 18+, that is only because the f-word is used at one point in the book. For the most part, the novel falls under ASR or maybe 13+.)
I especially liked... | ||
The main character was extremely realistic and easy to like. The story is told in first person, and throughout, there's an almost conversational tone that really gets the reader close to the story. Also, I liked how Corman portrayed God in the story, avoiding insults or preferences toward any faith, doing his best to make God a character that the reader could understand and relate to.
I didn't like... | ||
To tell the truth, I can't think of anything I didn't like about this book.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Watch the movie again. I've seen it once, many years ago, and while it is different from the book in several ways, the basic message and tone is the same.
This Book made me feel...
Thoughtful. Although Corman in no way tries to pass the God in his novel as the true God, he makes the reader think, and even wonder.
I recommend this Book because...
Even if you aren't religious, this book won't make you feel pressured or uncomfortable. It's a book for the everyday person, and is in no way preachy or overtly religious. In other words, it's accessible to anyone and will provide both entertainment and food for thought.
I don't recommend this Book because...
If you don't like humorous stories about God and religion, then I can see you possibly being offended by the novel.
