A true story about Barbara Moss, a girl growing up in poverty in 1950s-1970s Alabama.
As a small girl, due to malnutrition and lack of medical care, Barbara's face and body begin to grow into mummy-like porportions.
She is teased in school about her moles and her crooked teeth. Barbara gets a job and with her paycheck gets the moles removed. Later on, her mother finds a way to get Barbara braces.
With that out of the way, Barbara's face still looks like a mummy. It isn't until a man tells her to put a bag over her face, that Barbara sigs up for experimental plastic surgery and comes out looking like a goddess, which scares her.

The truth. Barbara always tells the truth in this story. When she tells how her father came home drunk and beats the kids and how scared she is when she woke up from her plastic surgery on her quest to be beautiful.
