Summary of this Book...
Kevin Parson is a 28-year old seminary student whose dark past is violently rooted up and made to cast shadows upon his present and future when he receives a mysterious phone call on his way home from school. This is a psychological thriller that'll leave you guessing until the very last page, until the very last chill.
This type of Book is good for...
reading really late at night so you get freaked out and think someone is going sneak inside your house and start stalking you just like Kevin and write cryptic messages on your milk jug...*Smile* This book is a great though-provoker as I am still pondering over the moral and psycholocial questions posed by this stirring piece. And I finished reading it about 3 months ago.
I especially liked...
the way Ted Dekker writes his characters and the way he gives you enough information so as not to be annoyingly secretive, but not so much that you can ever really figure everything out until the very end.
I didn't like...
well...I honestly don't think there was anything about this book I didn't like. This was however one of those books were I, being a nailbiter when reading or watching stuff that leaves me guessing, had absolute stubs for nails at the end.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Cry. Scream. Share every unbelieveable and life-changing detail with somebody else. This book literally had me shivering. I also wanted to hunt down every piece this author had ever written. Unfortunately, the library has most of his stuff on reserve for the next 20 years. Okay so it was more like 7 months, but still...*Smile*
This Book made me feel...
one with the characters. There is a bit of Kevin in all of us. Which is a pretty scary thought if you've read this entire book.
The author of this Book...
is absolutely amazing. Where Stephen King has always been too overtly (and pointlessly) gross *hides from any King fans out there with sticks* and often leaves me wondering why in the world he ever wrote the book, Dekker delivers a strong, provocative, and stirring message as he presents and age-old topic with an originality and freshness that is very appealing to me. He presents the awesome and chilling story of the struggles between evil and good and our humanity that are present in every soul, battling for control of our person, in a way that I've personally, never seen. His prose is wonderful, his characters alive, and I love his work down to the very last deliciously disturbing detail. So yah, I'm a bit obsessed with the author after reading this book. *Smile*
I recommend this Book because...
personally, I really enjoyed it. I think that everyone could draw a little something from this book and what it reveals about the human character and subconcious.
I don't recommend this Book because...
I know some people who didn't because they were expecting a nice lovely Christian suspense novel like all those others out on the market. But that's not Dekker's style at all. The story he has to tell isn't at all "nice" or fluffy and bright. So if you don't like that sort of thing, you should probably steer clear of this.
Further Comments...
I've rated this book +18 (R) because I'm not sure it can be classified as just +13 {PG-13). It gets very dark in some places and while there isn't excessive gore there is violence and it is described. Maybe I have an overactive imagination, but its very easy to conjur up pictures that, uh, aren't so lovely. Or something I'd recommend for a 13 year old to go and read.
