Summary of this Book...
Mace Windu: legendary Jedi Master, inventor of the 7th ring of Jedi Combat, one of the deadliest, most dangerous men alive. Now he's been called by his fellow Council member and apprentice, Master Billaba, to travel to a war-torn jungle planet to save her from the darkness that is digesting her being, her very essence, piece by piece.
I especially liked...
how parts of the book were written in first person from Mace's perspective and labeled as part of his private journal. It added a new level to his character that was really amazing. I've also always been a fan of the obscure Council member, Depa Billaba, and so of course I really liked the insight into her character as well. The one thing that really struck me however was Stover's use of humor. It was absolutely wonderful to feel submerged in the darkness of the jungles of Haruun Kal with the characters and feel their desparate need as your own and yet still be able to hold on to a smile and a few good laughs now and again. It really threw into perspective how even in the darkest situations, there's still some sunshine left. And the book gets really dark, let me tell you.
I didn't like...
Well...that the book ended! *Smile* I found that on the last page, I could've just kept reading and reading more and more! Also, I can't say too much without totally giving the ending away, but the author kinda left me hanging in regards to what happened to Billaba's character. It was the only place in the book I had to fill in my own little details. My friends/family who have also read this book however, say that they really don't know what I'm talking about. So go figure. Maybe my need to fill in more details stems from my greater desire to just have more of the story in general...hmmmm...I wonder...*Smile*
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
share it with someone! I also went back and read the good bits over again as is my custom with good stories/movies I read/watch.
This Book made me feel...
sad...and yet still hopeful. It should leave you with a good feeling I think if you read through it and grasp all the philosophical tidbits and the deeper meaning of the story. I mean, its not a happy ending to say the least, but it is the kind of ending you can really take something from. You know, gain a deeper understanding and uncover a new level of truth. That sort of thing.
The author of this Book...
did an amazing job bringing Lucas' universe and characters to life. Kudos and high praise to you Mr. Stover!!
I recommend this Book because...
well, I liked it, and believe that fellow Star Wars fans will as well. I even think that those who aren't particularly enamored with Star Wars, or even Science Fiction (woah am I going out on a limb here!) can still draw something from this story and enjoy the read.
I don't recommend this Book because...
if you have a tendency to do things like throw-up easily when something gross happens or is mentioned, then I would tread carefully. There are parts of this that made even my stomach do a flip and I'm usually all but unaffectable when it comes to that sort of thing.
Further Comments...
I've rated this book R for strong thematic elements, strong violence, and some stomach-flipping moments. Its a book about a war, people. Its not supposed to be rosy and pretty so don't expect rainbows and sing-alongs. But do expect a well-told tale with twists, suspense, action, humor, and a whole bunch of potential energy that's just waiting for you open the cover and read.
