So you think you know the story? Unless you've read the book, you have been mercilessly misguided. Nearly everything about the story was changed in Roger's and Hammerstein's stage version of the story, from the kids' names and ages to the actual events leading to the Trapp family's fleeing of Austria. When Maria joined the family, it was in the mid 1920s, not late 1930s. The story surrounding their hurried leaving was not quite as dramatic as the above mentioned dramatists. The mainstay of the story takes place in the United States, where they toured as a singing group in order to earn money. peaceful, in a sense I can't describe. Sometimes I was excited, nervous, and there were many parts that made me laugh (like when Maria swallowed a fly). | ||

it really is a family book, with little antcedotes for the everyone. Heartwarming and fun, there are a lot of elements you don't find in many books, particularly the more recent ones. | ||

This is really a great source for learning about Catholic customs and Austrian folk-customs. It also does a wonderful job of comparing European and American traditions and cultures. | ||
