It is the discworld where men take all the good jobs and woman have to do the degrading jobs. In a far off land a wizard is looking for the 8th son of an 8th son to pass his staff onto. He performs "the passing of the staff" but forgot to check the sex of the baby. So this is the story of the first female wizard and everyones attitude towards Esk, the heroine, who desperatly wants to do magic but when she finds out that she has no chance she still does not give up.

The fact that there are no chapters is a bit of a downer as you have to remember where you left off.

Read the next Discworld novel and I did and it was equally good.

Terry Pratchett, author of the Discworld series, The nomes series, and the Johnny series

It is really funny and Mr Pratchett's style of writing is very well thought out and written.

Again because of the lack of chapters, but other than that it is excellent.
