Summary of this Book...
An 11 year old boy named Harry Potter whose parents died when he was a baby and so he is living with his nasty Aunt and Uncle who treat him like dirt. This story follows the typical "rags to riches" plot known to many fairy-tales and folklore. Harry goes from being a mistreated ordinary boy to a famous and powerful wizard all in one day.
I especially liked... | ||
Harry's first day of Potions class where he meets the moody Professor Snape. And some of the scenes with the Dursley family were really funny.
I didn't like... | ||
A few things near the end were kinda gross but I won't spoil the surprise. Safe to say that small children should probably not have this read to them.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read the next and see the movie.
This Book made me feel...
Curious about events in the book that are mentioned in passing; people's pasts, why they are the way they are.
The author of this Book...
Is J.K Rowling, but of course you knew that already right? Her personal story is almost as amazing as her creation's.
I recommend this Book because...
It's a cute, entertaining story.
I don't recommend this Book because...
Some parts are not for young children. It is written in a very simple style, don't expect high quality allegory, metaphors, etc.
Further Comments... | ||
As a Christian who got curious about the whole HP hype, I was a bit hesitant to read a book that was so obviously about witchcraft. However, after reading it I can say that I truly believe it is harmless. Young children might get scared at parts but then this book is aimed at young adults, not young children. Use discretion parents! If you are a parent and still have qualms about your kids reading it: (1) read it yourself and (2) talk with your kids and make sure they understand the difference between fantasy and reality. (3) read this book: [[ Product review #106408 does not exist. ]]. It shows you how to prepare your child for real spiritual danger. There's also a fabulous book out by John Granger (no relation of Hermione!) called "Looking for God in Harry Potter." Recently I re-read this book on a whim and I was reminded about how little the magic in Harry's world had to do with how much I enjoyed the story. For me, anyway, it's the characters I like to read about, their interactions with each other.
