Summary of this Book...
Selected short stories from fifty-six authors, ranging from W. Irving, Hawthorne, and Poe to Amy Tan, Sandra Cisneros, and Pinckney Benedict. Each short story is a classic gem with each author's short biography given at its beginning.
I especially liked...
the wide range and variety of selections from Poe's "Telltale Heart" to Mukherjee's "The Management of Grief". Each story a dazzles with a different tone and quality of prose.
I didn't like...
the fact that the book is too thick to carry around and reading it is cumbersome unless you are seated at a comfortable chair and table. I do most of my reading on the go.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
tell people about it because it is a must book for anyone who is interested in serious short fiction.
This Book made me feel...
proud to have discovered further the brilliancy of American short story.
The author of this Book...
Joyce Carol Oates is a wonderful story teller herself as well as a literary analyst and university professor. As the editor of this collection she has done an amazing job of putting together true gems.
I recommend this Book because...
it is an anthology of most exquisite short stories that leave the reader in awe after the book is finished. It is a wonderful book for reading at home.
I don't recommend this Book because...
It is cumbersome to carry around if you want to read it while traveling.
Further Comments...
This book is not an anthology of best seller stories or hits, although some stories are well-known. Yet, each story, with its excellent usage of English, sparkles in its own way.
