“Me and White Supremacy” by Layla Saad is the type of book that is difficult to review because everything she writes is so on point. For me to try to sum it up in this short review would be a huge disservice. The book is a 28 day challenge for white people to confront and wrestle with their ingrained white privilege. I read White Fragility by Robin DeAngelo a while back and now know I need to read that book and this book multiple times over. I was so impressed by Saad’s depth in this book. Each chapter (each day of the challenge) dove deeply into a wide variety of topics related to race and what it means to be white. I will say, I did not follow the rules because I could not read just one chapter at a time. I intend to reread the book and work through the accompanying workbook to further explore the topics Saad covers in the book. Each chapter comes with a set of Reflective Journaling prompts to help bring the things we have internalized to the surface so we can identify them and make the necessary changes. If you are ready to do the work of actually becoming anti-racist, this is the book for you. Reading “White Fragility” and “Me and White Supremacy” will open your eyes (especially those who consider themselves white liberals). Highly, highly recommend.
