This isn't a bad book, or a poorly written book, or even necessarily a bad storyline. It didn't work for me though, as I found it tedious and mildly confusing at times. I appreciate the author trying to work with something new (and difficult). It didn't exactly fall flat, but it was mostly just 'okay'. That being said, the character development in this installment is spectacular. Hutchison has managed a great balance between lough-out-loud humour and heart-wrenching moments. I don't mean 'aw, that was sweet', or 'oh, that was touching'. I'm talking hot-mess big-tears snotty-nose moments (this reader, not the characters). I had to put the book down twice just to take a moment to settle down. If this rating was only for the first 2/3 of the book, I would have likely rated it a 3, which is my lowest rating of any book so far in the series. I liked it because it was Space Team, but I didn't love this particular installment. And then I hit the final 1/3. If the rating was based on that part, it was 5 stars. It was so well done, with tons of 'moments' and character growth. So, it lands a solid 4, and even though the overall book was my least favourite of the series as yet, the last 1/3 was by far my favourite part of any of the books. As the first disappointment with any of the installments, obviously I'll be continuing the series. I'm not about to let one little space bump stop me from following Splurt around. | ||
