Stephen King’s “Elevation” is not your typical, thud-on-your-doorstep, horror-ific King novel. It is an upbeat tale just over 100 pages about an average guy with a very strange condition. The synopsis on Amazon calls the condition “eerie,” but I wouldn’t even go that far. It is a story about overcoming differences, learning to accept people as they are, making new friends in your adulthood, and being an all-around generous and loving human being.

I should note that I read the audiobook version and recommend you choose it over the paper version for a few very specific reasons. First, it is read by King himself, which is my favorite kind of audiobook because when the author reads their own work, they know their characters so intimately, it gives a flavor and depth that does not exist in the paper version. And King’s delivery is just perfect for this story. Second, the audiobook comes with a special short story at the end, also ready by King, called “Laurie,” which … well, I think I liked it even more than “Elevation” itself! More on that later.

I initially added this book to my list because it was King. I had no expectations about the storyline, but knew King’s writing was sure to impress, and impress it did. He has this uniqueness of voice that is so stylistically pleasing and fits the characters and the story so well. The words are so crisp and carefully crafted, but also feel innocent in a way, as if the effort of perfection took no effort at all. I love reading King, no matter the story, because I always learn so much from his writing.

And speaking of learning, I’ve been meaning to learn more about writing short stories, and so when this audiobook surprised me with a lovely bonus story after “Elevation,” I was beyond pleased. The story of “Laurie” is the story of a dog (I’m already in love) and her bond with a man who needs her, but doesn’t want her. They are unlikely companions at first, but after a run in with death, their bond is solidified and they each realize their love for the other. A heartwarming tale, and again, so stunning in its execution, I was easily borne along on the ride and could easily relate to the characters and their emotions.

If you do decide to pick up this odd duck of a King book, I highly recommend the audiobook version. At 3 hours 45 minutes, it’s ideal for a short road trip with this on the radio.
