My library offered the other half of the series (Black Tides) via ebook , but not this one - even though they were released simultaneously?? I liked Black Tides so much, I immediately purchased Red Threads. And now that I have Red Threads, and IT IS SO BEAUTIFUL, I will by Black Tides just so they can sit together on the shelf and hang out and be awesome to look at.

The book itself: While Black Tides covered the story of both twins, this one focuses on Mokoya, after catastrophic events unfold, leaving her physically and spiritually broken. Spoiler alert, she is only physically repaired as this book begins. While she is outwardly a fighting spirit, internally she's a mess, and her story arc is the type of gut-punch I haven't experienced since Fullmetal Alchemist (though if it came down to it, I'd still pick Alchemist as a whole, but of course, this Tensorate series isn't finished yet...). One of those OMG-please-don't-let-it-be-that moments.

Red Threads will likely appeal to those who didn't like Black Tides, but liked the concept of the world. While I didn't find Black Tides lacking in focus or jumping around too much, this book is certainly the more consistent in terms of timeline (a few days), setting (two or three places) and character focus (Mokoya). Thematically, it focuses on grief and healing, though for the fantasy fans, this one certainly has more battling than Black Tides. And although having less explanation, it adheres to Black Tide's transnormative world, and features a non-binary romantic lead.

While I enjoyed this story, after I realized the character arc, the final "who's behind everything" felt a little less nuanced than the rest of the writing. So...dock like half a star? Mokoya's ultimate arc more than makes up for it, but it is a slight flaw nonetheless.

I am SO excited there's going to be more of this series.
