Gideon Crew is, simply put, an action hero. He's a master-of-disguise and he's been hired by the government to intercept plans from a Chinese scientist. The book is a thrill-ride that will make a great movie.

fans of Preston & Child will no doubt pick up this first book in their new series. If reviews are any indication, however, they won't like it.

The book kept me guessing and it was a fairly quick read. It was definitely entertaining.

This new series lacks the depth and sophistication of the Penderast series (the books Preston & Child are most known for), and that is why there is such a negative reaction to these new action books. The Pendergast series focused more on art, architecture, a convoluted mystery, and great characters. So far, the Gideon series is a straightforward action series with a dash of mystery and not much substance.

revisit the Pendergast series to remind me why I follow these two writers.

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child have written a number of successful novels together (including the popular "Pendergast Series").

Although the book is far from perfect, I enjoyed it, and I'll continue reading the series (the second book was just released, though it was just as poor reviews as the first). If you can remember that this is a straight action novel (movie rights are already sold), you will probably enjoy it.
