Loving yourself
As I look into the mirror
I pose this way and that
Trying to compare myself
To those I seen on tv
Those with lighter skin
Those with longer hair
The perfect figure
But to MTV generation
me, I’m just too plain

How hard it is
To be a woman
To be a woman in the year 2005
To look in the mirror
And not have to lie
About the fact that you don’t have long hair
About the fact that hey...I don’t have curves there
About the fact that my eyes may not be blue
Or I may not be a size two
To be a woman is hard enough
But to be a black woman
Is just too much
Because we all can’t be as beautiful as Alicia Keys
Or half the women on BET
Or have the money of Ms. Winfrey
I may not be a CEO
Whose whole life story is told
Inside the pages of Ebony
But to me
As I turn off the tv
And walk away from my reflection
I know my life lesson
That we need extraordinary
Common
Everyday women to look up to
I understand how to be yourself in everything you do
Because everyone who is someone in Hollywood’s eyes
Had in the beginning be like me to survive
To survive today’s expectations
So in my realization
I am me
I am free
To be
Whatever I chose to be
While all the while
Just being
Plain ‘ole me
