Children's fantasy poem about fairies in a wood.
Sing a Song of Nightingales
By: Casey Allison Crumby

Bridget sings a song of nightingales
That whisper in the wind
And perch upon magnolias’ shoulders
To talk about the glen

For that is where the diamonds lie
Upon their satin pillows
The secret fairies put them there
To watch them slowly grow

Some become blue sapphires
Beneath the fallen snow
While others turn to red rubies
As the secret fairies know

How they got there you might ask
About such precious gems
“And so I’ll tell you,” Bridget says.
“Because you are my friend”

The diamonds fell from the sky
Because they once were stars
And like a sparkling rain they fell
From very very far

They shook the earth
Like a great rolling thunder
And the fairies of the glen
Were amazed and in wonder

The shimmering stones were from the Heavens
“They must be,” said the fairies.
And they danced and sang all day
Because they were so merry

But they knew they had to keep them safe
So they made them satin pillows
And placed the diamonds on them
And put them under willows

“The willows will keep them safe,”
Said the fairies in the blue glen.
No one will see them but the nightingales
And they can grow for us to send

To our lovely and wonderful queen in Heather
Who lives by the East Norse Stream
Oh she’ll be so gleeful
To see the diamonds gleam

That night around willow leaves
The winter’s snows fell
Upon the diamonds on their pillows
Despite the fairies’ protective spells

And when they came the morning after
The diamonds had turned anew
Some had become new stones
So the myths were very true!

If you put a diamond upon satin
It will turn to ruby stones
It can also turn to sapphires
In winter’s fallen snows

And that is Bridget’s song of nightingales
That live in the glen’s willows
And sing about the diamonds
That grow on satin pillows
