A speech given at a Toastmaster's meeting |
There have been found carvings in caves of strange looking creatures dating centuries past. Today we see pictures of aliens as described by people who profess to have seen them. Strangely enough the pictures in our papers look very much like those that have been found in these caves. How can this be? Same picture, yet centuries apart. In Greek mythology there are gods and goddesses. They were supposedly supernatural beings who walked amongst the people of the earth for a period of time and then would return to their home, Mount Olympus, somewhere in the heavens. According to the bible, Jesus was not of this world but came from Heaven. Where did all these myths and beliefs come from? Was it all mass hysteria? All myths and legends as well as religious beliefs started with a truth. As time progressed, these truths were added to or subtracted from and became legends and eventually the legends became myths or religious beliefs. The problem is separating truth from fiction. Is there other intelligent life beside us in the universe? I say why not!! Let’s look at our Universe, which has been said, may be only one of several … Within our Universe there are over 100 billion galaxies. Our galaxy is part of the Virgo Supercluster, know as the Milky Way Galaxy. Superclusters consist of thousands of galaxies. Our galaxy cluster, the local Group lies on the edge of the Virgo Cluster. Earth is part of the Milky Way Galaxy that has at least 200 billion stars. Within this Galaxy there are solar systems. Solar systems consist of a sun or multiple suns and planets that surround them. Our solar system is not even close to the core of the Milky Way Galaxy. We are located in one of the outer spiral arms of the galaxy. Imagine how miniscule earth really is. This entire image taken by the Hubble covers an area in the sky no larger than a grain of sand held at arm’s length. The Universe with its seemingly endless array of stars, undoubtedly harbors worlds we cannot begin to imagine. As we begin to understand how vast space is, how can we not but accept the possibility of there being other forms of intelligent beings out there beside ourselves. Are we that egotistical? I believe that the possibility of other life forms existing elsewhere in the Universe is very real. They may not look or sound like us but I believe they exist. Remember that living creatures have a way of adapting to their environment. We only have to look at ourselves, how we have evolved through the centuries. We should not scoff at things just because it hasn’t been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. We have not even begun to explore the Universe and all that it contains. So to say there is no other life forms outside of own little world is being narrow-minded. To say that aliens or UFOs have not visited our planet is also being narrow-minded. Remember, just because we can’t prove it, doesn’t make it not so. There have been too many people from too many parts of the world throughout too many centuries that have claimed to have seen UFOs and/or beings that were not of this world.
