Dead Wings: Part 2

Chapter 3
"They split up, because of me... because I died!" I shouted to Ben.

"Well what do you think you’re going to do about it?" Ben said as he looked at me across from my mothers hospital room.

"I don't know... Is there anything I can do?"

Ben smiled at me with a strange look in his eyes. He nodded as he looked at his hands for a moment and they glowed slightly and he gently pushed the doctor’s glass of water off the table. The glass slowly swayed on the edge and the water over taking the balance the glass tipped over and the water poured on the floor as the glass bounced on the floor. He looked back at me with a smile, "You could do stuff like that... and you can try to control bodies, but thats pretty hard..."

"Hmm..." I thought about it for a moment. "I don't know that I could bring them back together with just that... Can I control their minds?"

"No"

"Well crap! I know it's not my fault… that they split up but I do want to do something about it..."

"Peter! Relax you're dead and they are alive!" Ben yelled that as if that would calm me, "Y10ou may want to do something for them and you can but do realize you are in two different worlds!"

"... ok..." I had to try to consider what he said. Two different worlds; living and dead... "Well... show me how to move objects then."

Ben smiled and looked back at his hands again and said, “Well you won’t have a lot of strength with this but you focus your form where your hand is. It becomes... thicker and won’t go through things as easy." Ben made his hands glow again as he picked up the glass and sat it back on the table with the water still sitting on the floor. "Now you try, Peter."

I threw my hand in front of me and tried to 'focus'... nothing happened.

"Try pushing up against the wall and try not to go through it."

I looked up at Ben as he said that and had to wonder if I could ever do that...

I waved my hand through the wall and felt the walls insides. Then I began to touch the outside of it without going through and this time I tried to form up around my hand. I pushed my hand against the wall and it slowly sunk into the wall and I had to wedge it back out... "Wow." I said aloud as I was relieved to see it actually work.

"I'm sure you will get the hang of it... if you’re going to be playing 'the guardian angel' job!" Ben laughed and I grinned slightly.

I looked towards my mother once more and I walked towards her. It appeared she was sleeping peacefully. My hand glowed again as I carefully pulled the curtains around the hospital bed.

"Doctor?" No answer.

"Oh... I thought she was asleep..."

"Oh, the window must be open..." she said to herself, "NURSE!" She yelled out suddenly. In a moment there was a girl there, but not a nurse! It was a beautiful girl with long, dark red hair. "I think my windows open, could you close... Rachel? What are you doing here?"

"I came to see how you were doing, I talked to Paul and he told me where you were... he told me what you said." she looked at my mother with such care but mom looked worried as Rachel mentioned her husband. "Don't worry Suzanne; the doctors aren't letting him come in."

"Well good; he's the last one I want to see!" I frowned as my mother said that and Ben laughed...

"Well, I need to tell you something. But I fear this is a bad time." Rachel said. I began to approach her but Ben held me back...

"A bad time..." My mother repeated Rachel’s words with much thought and a tear fell down her cheek and mom smiled real big. Rachel could tell mom knew what she meant. I on the other hand, was clueless.

Rachel went up to my mothers bed and sat on the side of it and held my mothers hand that was restrained to the bed. They both smiled at each other as they stared into eachothers eyes.

"Suzanne, now that you know. You can't go around trying to kill yourself. I... we need you."

I was a bit lost at her words... what does she mean?

"The doctors intend to keep you here for a few weeks and if they don't think you’re ready to be released in the world yet they will put you in an insane asylum." My mother nodded to what Rachel said.

"Okay, I understand. I'll be here for you..." My mother said.

I was completely lost, but glad. Rachel had taken my mom from her suicidal depression to having a purpose again... whatever purpose that was... it was good!

“I’ve figured it out, Peter!” Kris came running through the hospital halls shouting those words, “I have figured it out... Peter!”

“Kris we're over here,” He finally found us and walked through the walls into my mother’s cell like room. “What have you figured out?” I asked him.

”I think I know what this is. I think there is a reason we’re still here and I think there is a heaven and hell!” I looked at him and I wasn’t sure what to make of his words…

“We’re in a limbo sort of thing! We have a chance to change where we go! We have things we need to fix before we leave this world!” Ben and I were quiet; I didn’t know what to say… “Ben can’t go anywhere until his father gets put in prison. I am probably going to hell but that might change if I can help Kathryn! Josh has to set things right with all the peoples lives he screwed up. You… you can’t go anywhere… until your moms… sane again.”

“Really?”

Chapter 4
"Tell the court what you saw?"

"When?" Kathryn asked. She was sitting in a large court room at the witness stand and suddenly she felt like her mind went... blank.

"You know when...the day of the shooting, May 6th."

"There was a shooting?"

"What? Yes there was a shooting, you were there! Don't play games you little b..."

"What the 'ell? I wasn't at a shooting. What are you talking about?!?"

"I am talking about Kris!"

"What about him?"

"You killed him!"

"What? No, I didn't!"

"Yes you bloody did!"

"No I didn't!" She screamed; she didn't like this. She was in a room being asked questions she didn't know the answer to. "I wasn't at a shooting; I don't know anything about a shooting! 'Ell I had no idea that there was a shooting!" She yelled at the man in the black suit. The man she suddenly dispised, the man accusing her... accusing her of murder? "Josh what is he talking about?" She asked but she heard no answer.

"Yes you were there and yes you did! Josh was there with you, and... he's dead! Thats why you killed Kris!"

"What... He’s dead? You are bloody questioning me and you are just now telling me Josh... is dead?!?" Her heart broke as she screamed those words.

"Unbelievable." The man in the black suit said as he turned away from Kathryn. He had enough of her little act, though he began to wonder if it was in fact an act. Well of course it’s an act she remembered it all yesterday!

"No. No! He can't be dead there’s a mistake!" She screamed at the man but he didn't appear to be listening, so she screamed louder; "You’re lying. You’re lying to me! Tell me where Josh is because he is not dead!"

"Ok. Forget it! You don’t want to talk? Then you can rot in prison. You can't shoot a guy and then act like it never happened! You killed her son!" The man in black pointed to a crying women that was suddenly all alone. "You saw him shoot those people. You saw Josh die, so you shot him!" The man stopped as he felt he had made his point; if he lost it in her little act...

"No! Don't say that, quit lying! No, this is all a dream. Shut up you... lying pig!"

"You shot him and-"

"Shut up! SHUT UP!" Kathryn screamed as she clogged her ears with her fingers.

"-you're going to rot in prison for it!"

"He's not dead! It’s all just a dream! He's not dead! Just a dream....wake up... wake up Kathryn! Just a dream... You didn't shoot anyone, wake up, No one died, wake up... wake up..."

"This is not a dream! Josh, Peter, Jessica, Mr. Thompson, and Kris. They are all dead and you killed one of them. You killed Kris Parker!"

"No. I didn't kill anyone!" She pleaded as she wiped the waterfall from her cheeks.

"Yes you did! Quit lying to yourself! We know that you shot him and there’s no use denying it. You shot Kris, you killed him. We have almost a hundred witnesses!"

"No. You’re lying! Shut up! Shut up... shut up... this is all a lie... all a lie; in a dream... "

"Kathryn. I'm not lying to you!"

"Then why don't I bloody know I shot someone? Huh? Answer that!" She asked him as if she really expected an answer.

"Uh..."

"Why don't I remember Josh dying?

"How could you not?"

"Why don't I... Why don't I feel the gun in my hand? WHY DON'T I REMEMBER FIRING THAT GUN?"

**********************************************

“You think this will really buy her time?” I asked.

“Buy her time? She looks crazy, they can’t put her away if she doesn’t remember a thing; can they?” Kris asked. He looked over to Josh who was completely unaware of what Kris had done.

“What happened to her?” Josh yelled at Kris as he just realized they were there.

“I tweaked her mind.” Kris laughed.

”You what? If you hurt her I will ki…”

“’Cause you can do that… right? Relax Josh; I just stole all her memories of the shooting. They might kill her other wise!” Kris explained.

“What does a punk like you care for?”

”I care because I messed up. Don’t you get it? You were the only one who was supposed to die!" Kris laughed at his mistake, "If she dies too, then well I couldn’t deal with that!” Kris stated. Josh stared at Kris and for a moment he thought maybe he respected him… maybe.

Suddenly Josh jumped up at Kris; swinging his arms at him! Strange though to think a ghost would try to fight a ghost... Then I realized though that Josh was starting to fade away. He screamed something but not a sound came out he kept thrashing trying to grab a hold of something as he slowly disapeared…

”Josh grab onto my arm!” I yelled. Kris stopped me. “We have to help him!” I yelled at Kris.

”No. No, we can’t and we shouldn’t… he’s going to heaven.”

"Oh."

*************************************************

“Given that Kathryn has no memory of the shooting, and that she is perhaps insane. She will stay in an insane asylum for five years and then we will trial her again.” The judge said. The man in the black suit looked furious at the girls punishment. Kathryn looked surprised and relieved... insane?

The nightmare was over, wasn’t it? No more false accusations. No more… ‘The nightmares over’ she said to herself and for a moment she believed herself. Later she would realize that it was just the beginning.

Chapter 5
If you can take away memories; does that mean you can add them? If you can be forgiven, does it mean you will go to heaven? What must we do to leave this plain? Once we do it, how sure can we be that it will be better? Kris thought by helping Kathryn that maybe he could leave. He didn’t leave, but if he did, where would he have gone? What must he do to make it to heaven now? Or is that infact where we go? To heaven or hell? Maybe Josh was erased from existance...

Kris said that we have to fix things that we left behind and we could leave. When I died I was informed of a secret. A secret between my friend Ben, and his father. A secret that if the police ever found out about, his father would go to prison. The thing is now there is only one person alive that knows this secret. So how can the secret be broken? So I have to wonder; if you can take away memories; does that mean you can add them?

***********************************************

“So you think that if the police have memory of Ben dying… and have memory of his dad hiding Ben’s corpse. That Ben can leave because he will have justice, and I may leave because…”

”Because you did a good deed… two in fact. You said that this is how this whole limbo thing works. So do this, and we will see if you’re right or not.”

Kris hesitated for a long moment then he nodded.

************************************************

I went ahead and helped Kris to see how exactly he could mess with a living things memories. In case I needed to do the same thing. So when we wanted memories of Bens murder we went to his old house where his father still lived.

It was a mess! As we walked in I couldn’t take my eyes off of the floor; there were beer cans, cigarette remains, trash, and clothes and… other? As I left the front room I became aware of a horrible odor. It wasn’t exactly the same as smelling it but to know it was there. It was coming from the kitchen where there was a sink full of rotting dishes… “Does he really live here?” I asked Kris, he only nodded as he stared into the hall. He didn’t look at me as he nodded he just kept staring into the hall.

I looked over there and I saw him. It was a clean man, completely detached from the home he lived in… He had clean brown hair with a few gray patches and a few days old beard. Strangely he stared back at us; as if he knew we were there. “Ben? Is that you?” He asked as apparently he felt our presence somehow, that or he was very paranoid… That’s what happens though when you kill your only son though, isn't it?

Kris ran at him and I couldn’t help but follow Kris as he jumped at the man as if to tackle him and I tried to do the same and we smashed up against his spirit. We were partly inside the old mans body. Suddenly we gained access to his senses, thoughts and memories…

We were smothered in this old mans memories. Memories of his childhood, memories of the whores he slept with, memories of the one night stands, the drunken days of an ageing man, the birth of Ben, the days he spent in jail, prison, trials, Ben when he was a kid, even more memories of the mans only son… until finally…

Our vision was blurred and twisted; our speech was long and choked… “You stoooole my ga… gun… Wese want it… back!” We stumbled towards Ben.

”No I didn’t your just to drunk to find it!” Ben turned away from us and tried to walk off but we grabbed him by the shoulder. Suddenly Ben punched us right in the face. We felt the pain of that moment as if we were living again...

We threw him against the clean walls and he began to bleed on the clean twisted floors.

“Yooooooooou betta gets it! Na na na now! Or I'll...”

”I don’t have it… anymore.” Ben said as he looked into our eyes as he whimpered.

We grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him up. We stared into eachothers eyes for a moment... Then we shoved him back against the wall and his head bounced against it... We stumbled over to him and punched him in his stomach.

He started to cough up blood on the floor so we grabbed him by the hair and pulled his face up… “You betta geeeeeeeeeeeeeeet it back!” The hairs ripped out of his head partly and partly slipped out and he yelped and he scrambled to his room as we kicked him… Suddenly the memory faded away and we saw darkness…

“Where did it go?” I asked.

“I don’t know he…”

We were digging a hole underneath the bathroom floor… it was deep and wet. As we finished digging we clawed at the dirt to get out but the dirt was to wet and wouldn’t hold. So we grabbed a hold of a floor joint and slowly we pulled ourselves back up.

We went to the sink and washed our hands of the filth under the house. We looked into the mirror and saw that dirty face, saw those red eyes, red eyes of a killer. They stared back at us… slowly we washed the dirt off our face and then finally we saw what the hole was dug for. There lying in a black plastic bag was the body of Ben… It was a pale blue color and was stained in blood. We carefully picked the bag up and carried it over to the hole. Then we let go and dropped him down into the hole. “Goodbye… son.” We waved goodbye and then we picked the shovel back up and slowly we covered his blue face and brown blood and dead body…

“Is that enough?” I asked Kris.

”I think so.” Kris answered.

We left the mans body and the moment we got out I nearly lost Kris! He left the house with such speed and slammed his spirit into the body of an officer. The officer collapsed from the attack and soon there was a crowd of people circling the man laying unconscience on the ground…

“Murder!” He yelped as he sprung from the ground… “All units, all units! There’s been a… murder…” He screamed into the radio but then he trailed off as he thought about what he just saw and he thought it was real… but it could have been a dream… “It was real! I saw the murder through his eyes! Murder on 4539 North Gatswort Avenue! We need to pick this guy up immediately!”

************************************************

That afternoon the police came and they busted into the pit of the house. They covered their faces as they passed the kitchen watching their step so they didn’t fall. Bens father was yelling at them to get out so they arrested the man. The man Ben once called his father.

The police hacked open his bathroom floor and started digging underneath the floor boards…

“CUNK” the shovels hit bone… At that moment Kris slowly faded away…
