A letter to my son to express my feelings and fears.
Thursday Jan 18,2001

Dear Matthew,
Today a miracle happened, you were born! This is a day that I have been waiting for all my life. I have been looking forward to this for many years. There is so many things I want to tell you, teach you, show you.

Sweetheart, I have numerous medical problems. Most of these will become evident to you when you begin to explore the world around you. The one that is the root cause of the others is called hydrocephlus. The more common phrase is water on the brain. It is for this reason that I thought I would never be able to have a family.

There are members of my family who expressed their displeasure at the prospect of my having a baby. The one thing you will realize, as you age, will be that my family thinks that it is fine to control me and tell me what to do. This subject alone could fill volumes of writings. I don't want to burden you with them.

What I want to do is make sure that all of YOUR senses are working properly. I want to make sure that you are growing, thriving, and developing normally. This may be overprotective, but I don't want to subject you to the pain I went through and still going through.

When I held you for the first time, the emotions all came to the surface. I was finally holding my own child. All 6# 2oz. and 21" of you. It didn't help when your grandfather was criticizing the way I was holding you. I would never hurt you! I started talking to you and you turned your head to look at me. My heart overflowed with love for you, and that will be forever. I hope that we will always be close. My love is unconditional and unending.

I look forward to the future and seeing you change and grow. I will be always be there for you. I hope that Shadow will love you as much as Daddy and I do. My world has permanently changed. But it has changed for the better.

I Love You Matthew Allen,

Mom
