At some point we are forced to face our past - and are hesitant to leave it there.
There is a point in our lives at which we come to an intersection of the road we now travel and one we once were on.

At this point, there is a brief moment of hesitation, of reluctance to move so far from our past that access is lost and there is no choice but to move forward.

At this point is when we face the shadows of our past - those that haunt our dreams and subconscious, fighting for recognition, to remind us of a world that we can ever truly leave behind. It was these shadows that we loved, put so much of our devotion, energy and soul into.

When faced with these shadows, our emotions overcome us. We fail to recognize anything other than what once was. We ignore the obvious wretchedness of what we see - and allow ourselves to conjure up the dreams that are long since dead.

We see not the "what was" or the "what is", but let our imaginations drift towards "what could have been".

We forget that we are not the guardians of the universe and can not play as though we are puppet-masters building up for the happy ending.

Then reality, like a sharp spear thrust through our very being casts us back to the tangible things of the world in which we live. Our shadows are revealed in their true form - some causing regret, other eliciting joy and relief.

At this point, we have to forget the dreams, the hopes of a future better than that which now awaits us. We say farewell to old shadows - and pass the moment on - never to look back.
