It's when you hate to hear the phone ring - |
The phone started ringing, Waking you from a sound sleep - You groggily look at the clock Some news just won't keep. It's the time of night when You know that something's wrong; You make a mental note of Where the children have gone. You jump out of the warm bed And hurry to catch the call Adrenalin coursing through you You bump into the wall. Turning on the light And picking up the phone - You can't believe that You're hearing a dial tone. Wide awake now it seems, Perhaps it was a wrong number That got you up out of bed Disturbing your sweet slumber. Then it starts to ring again! This time you are prepared You grab the phone to answer By now you're feeling scared. "Ah, I'm sorry, I know it's late But I had to have an ear to bend" Relief that it was not disaster Just a call from a dear friend! I remember other calls That came in the dark of night, "Your son's had an accident, But he will be all right". Or "Mom, I just had to call - Had to hear your voice - Things aren't going well at all, And I don't have a choice". So the phone calls at midnight Are the bain of every mom and dad; Your first thought is of trouble Or what's happened must be bad! Relaxing now, you talk awhile To the friend without a clock; "Oh, that's all right" you say "About time we had a talk!" You laugh together over life, Some news just won't keep; Then hanging up, you think "At last I'll get some sleep.." |
