Revelation 10-11 Interlude The scroll, the two witnesses, and the 7th trumpet. |
Lesson 15 Questions First Day: Read Lesson 14 Notes. The notes and lecture fortify the truth of the passage for understanding and application to daily life. 1. How did the lecture help you better comprehend God’s dealings with unbelievers and believers? 2. How did the notes help you understand God’s work in and through His judgment? Second Day: Read Revelation 10. John saw a vision of a mighty angel and a little scroll. 3. a. Describe the details of John’s vision in verses 1-4 and John’s response to what he saw. Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.” b. Why do you think John was told not to write what the seven thunders said? Because it was the voice of God, and we are not to know what He said. 4. Who did the mighty angel swear by and what did he declare? The angel swore by Almighty God, creator of all things. He declared there would be no more delay, and in the days of the seventh trumpet call the mystery of God would be revealed. 5a. Why might the little scroll have tasted sweet to John but soured his stomach? How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Psalm 119:103 Because the word of God has sweetness to it, but the message is a bitter one. ESV b. What instructions did John receive in verse 11? How might this relate to his eating of the scroll? He must prophesy about many people and nations and languages and kings. The message John gives is the bitter one. 6. What has God revealed to you as you have studied His Word recently that you previously did not understand? (See also Ephesians 3:4-6; Colossians 1:24-28; and 1 Corinthians 15:51-55.) Third Day: Read Revelation 11:1-6. John received heavenly instructions and saw two witnesses. 7. What was John told to measure, and why was the outer court not to be measured? John was told to measure the temple and the altar and those who worship there. The outer court was given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for 3 1/2 years. 8a. In what ways do you see God’s protection of the two holy witnesses in this passage? The two witnesses stand before the Lord. They can send fire from their mouths to kill others who would hurt them. b. How willing are you to actively witness about God and His truth? What holds you back? I’m not willing to witness. Fear holds me back. Fourth Day: Read Revelation 11:7-14. John saw the aftermath of witnesses' testimony. 8a. What will the beast and the people of the world do to the two witnesses? The beast will make war on them, conquer and kill them, and leave them in the city streets to rot. The people will leave the two witnesses in the street, refusing to bury them. Worldwide, people will stare at their bodies, and celebrate their deaths. They will exchange gifts and be glad, because these two prophets are dead and not going to torment people any longer. b. How did God intervene on behalf of the two witnesses? God raised them from the dead. They stood up, and the people who saw the two witnesses were terrified. They heard a loud voice from Heaven—I think it is the voice of God—saying “Come up here!” They will go up to Heaven in a cloud while their enemies watch. c. What happened to the city, and how did the survivors respond? In the same hour, there was a huge earthquake. Half the city fell, 7,000 people died, and the rest were terrified. They gave glory to the God of Heaven. 10 a. From the following verses, what does God promise about eternal life, and what comfort does this give you? John 11:25-26 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.[a] Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 14:1-4 Jesus Is going to prepare a place for us, then come back and take us to Him. Where Jesus Is, we will go too. Where Jesus Is, we will go. We know the way to where He Is going. 1 Corinthians 15:20-28 When Jesus returns, believers will be given life. God will put all enemies in subjection to Him, and the last enemy to be destroyed is death. Philippians 3:20-21 We are citizens of Heaven, are will be transformed. We will be given a glorious body, just as Jesus has. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 Don’t grieve for the ones who die. Since Jesus died and rose from the dead, we will rise from the grave. The dead in Christ shall rise first, then the living shall follow. 1 John 3:2 When Jesus appears, we will know Him and be like Him. b. With whom is God calling you to share these eternal truths? What steps will you take to do so? Fifth Day: Read Revelation 11:15-19. The seventh trumpet sounded. 11. a At the sound of the trumpet, what was declared and how did the elders respond? The Seventh Trumpet 15 Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. 18 The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.” 19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings,[a] peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. b. From verse 18, who will be judged and who will be rewarded? (See also John 3:16-21.) The dead are judged. The prophets, the saints, and those who fear God’s name will be rewarded. 12. Describe the heavenly scene that opened to John and how it inspires your worship of the Lord. 19 Then God's temple in heaven was opened, and the ark of his covenant was seen within his temple. There were flashes of lightning, rumblings,[c] peals of thunder, an earthquake, and heavy hail. Rev. 11:19 ESV His majesty is revealed here. He allowed John to see the Ark of the Covenant. On earth, this would have killed John, but there is no death in Heaven. I cannot not worship God, because this scene overwhelms me. Not worshipping feels like denying Him, when He is revealing His love, power, and majesty this powerfully. 13. How will you respond to what the Lord has revealed, promised, declared, or fulfilled in your life this week? Reread verses 16-18, and write your own declaration of praise. You, o Lord, are the one who directs my paths, steering me to wisdom and understanding. You are the One Who answers when I ask and listen. You are the only One who refreshes me and tells me to reject fear and doubt when they try to invade my spirit. You, Lord, are Holy. Your might and splendor are beyond all comprehension, and I know I am safe in your presence. Sixth Day: Review Revelation 10–11. Judgment looms as Christ’s glorious eternal reign approaches. 14. How has your study of the Lord, His promised return, and His coming judgment affected your thoughts, emotions, and motivations? (Are you afraid, apathetic, encouraged, excited, etc.?)
