Halloween Thoughts

Halloween is getting close, unfortunately on a Tuesday. Nobody wants Halloween on a week day. The die-hards always pick the closest weekend and go nuts, so I guess Wednesday is even worse since the die-hards get to pick between two weekends and half of them pick one, and half the other. Makes it hard to even go out if you’re not a happy halloweener.

It’s bad enough that for the whole month of October you have to deal with weird and often stupid decorations in at least one yard in every neighborhood. This year seems to be the year of skeletons. This little neighborhood alone has a party in one front yard of skeletons sitting in lawn chairs and cooking over a grill, and another house has a, probably twenty-foot, tall skeleton in their yard staring out at everybody. The house right next door is literally covered with what looks like spider webs and giant plastic spiders. And, of course, there are spotlights, wouldn’t want people to miss out when it actually gets too dark to see.

Whatever happened to the pumpkin on the porch, maybe a scarecrow holding the basket of “treats,” that was my childhood. It was for fun then, not something to scare you to death! Though, I admit, I may be being too harsh. But I really do hate this stupid holiday now. My new friends tell me it’s a normal reaction, and that I will get over it in a few more years. It’s true, I have only been living here a couple years. They told me once you’re dead, nothing’s really scary anymore. They should know I guess; this cemetery I’m buried in has been here for at least three hundred years…
