Once when I was a child
I made a big mistake
I bought my Mother
A simple, Mother’s Day gift
And card.

She responded in anger,

Saying,


“John,
I am so disappointed in you
I don’t need any Corporate BS holiday
Don’t be fooled by corporations.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Days
Are nothing but a scam
To get you to buy their junk
Which I don’t want or need.

It is just “Big Flower” and
“Big Candy” Corporate BS.

Don’t buy into the scam
So please no more
Mother’s Day gifts
For me.”

I nodded in approval
And understanding.

From that point on
I never bought her
A Mother’s Day gift.

But I did call her
On Mother’s Day

She said
I should call anytime
For every day
Is Mother’s Day for her.

She said,
“I don’t need
any corporate BS holiday.
To comfort me. “

She was a true American mother
A truly unique free spirit
That I miss every day
Since “Big A” took her
From me in 2005.
