Historical Fiction/Israel/Holocaust
Set in 1949 with numerous flashbacks to 1939 and the intervening years, TEN YEARS GONE is an Israeli private Investigator novel, #1 in the Adam Lapid Mysteries. This is my second Israeli mystery, and I was enraptured, especially with the setting, so soon after Israel's Independence, and the delineation of the Holocaust through the memories of the Protagonist and other characters. It was a fascinating view of Palestine (as it was termed then) under British rule and then Israeli sovereignty. Not a subject I had known much about, so reading this novel was gratifyingly educational. Additionally, the mystery Lapid investigates is a ten-year-old Cold Case, and terrifically convoluted. The tragedies (regional and individual) are distressing but the author leavens with Character evolution (much of which involves maturing and coming to terms with the way life is and will be) and some good outcomes.
