When I was about 6 YO my mama made a prediction that I might just make a mighty marvelous writer some day. She told me about her exact words. You see I used to babble on with my stories long after in tract due date, and the teacher would hold her hands up, palm facing palm, slowly moving them closer: i. e. Brandon (my name at the time - please please don't use it now!) shorten your running away sentence, .. paragraph, .. short story, .. thing! Meanwhile my Mom was watching one day babbling away again to a teacher and then says quietly "this kids gonna be a great writer someday!"
I think adding in odd and interesting and funny details is what grips the exciting part of the brain(y) for the readers.
