Pay it forward from the bottom of your heart.
Christmas was a day away and so I decided to buy a Christmas tree. I went to the store and got a small tree with a few lights and ornaments. I didn’t know if I wanted to put an angel or a star on top of the tree. In the end I decided to get both.
The more the merrier, I thought as I reached the cashier. To my surprise my stuff was paid by the lady in front of me. She smiled at me and said: “Pay it forward. Merry Christmas.”
I didn’t know what to say as I was unsure how.
Outside, there was Santa, ringing a bell and asking for donations. Sadly, I had no change. I half smiled at him as I passed him by.
“Have a good holiday!” Santa said.
I sat in my car for a moment as I wondered what I can do to “pay it forward.” As I contemplated I went to the local diner for a piece of pie and a cup of coffee.
Before I could finish my pie I noticed a father and son. The son was shivering and asking for something to eat.
I could see the father’s weary face as he searched for money in his pocket. He shook his head and they walked out. The waitress told me what the father had planned to order but did not have enough. I went outside and found them.
“Excuse me, sir?” I said.
“Yes?” He wondered.
“Here you go,” I said as I handed them a bag with their order.
“I don’t get it?” He said.
I smiled and responded: “Merry Christmas.”
He stared at me for a moment before he smiled and thanked me. Overall, it was a good day.
