A young halfling and her half-orc partner test for entry to the Thieves Guild
The Second Test

Skrie crouched on the roof, listening for the signal.

When it came, she slid from her perch, following the map she had committed to memory. The diminutive halfling raced across a flat surface to the trapdoor she knew would be unlocked. That is if her friend Tiny had done his part correctly. Because she was so small, she usually took the aerial work. Her half-orc partner handled the groundwork.

Their task for this part of the test was to create a diversion to distract the guard. Then, break into Master Halligan's pawn shop, in broad daylight, to recover a specific item that had been recently turned over to the man. The owner of said trinket wanted it back.

"Oh, and don't get caught by the guard," added the guild master with a smirk.

"O'er here," came a rough voice from the entrance. "I gots ya a place t' get in."

Tiny's topknot preceded him through the opening in the roof. Skrie joined her friend in the darkened attic.

"Guide me to where I need to get into the shop," said the halfling. "I can't see a bloody thing."

Tiny lifted a wooden "plug" from the floor, allowing some light to illuminate Skrie's way. Peeking over the edge of the hole, she saw nothing in the shop. The half-orc ran a rope through the halfling's harness and lowered her into the space below.

Moments later, she signaled him to pull her up. No sooner had she climbed back into the attic, Master Halligan appeared behind the counter. Without a sound, Tiny lowered the plug back into place. The pair crept back to the roof.

"What'd y' get?"

"It's a button," said Skrie, looking at the object in her hand.

Two down, she thought, five to go.
