The Attack of the Spiders for Daily Flash |
The Attack of the Spiders Sam Adams and his best friend, Jake Lee were on a mission, to do the PCT before they got too old and decrepit to do it. They were in the late ’60s and retired living in Berkeley, their hometown. Sam was a widower and Jake had never married. Sam had done a lot of things in his life ended up as a diplomat before retiring. Jake had been a professional actor all his life. They flew down to San Diego and headed east to the southern terminus of the trail. They spent the night and hit the trail in the morning. There were few people on the trail as it was early in the season. On the third day, they passed through a summer cabin area. Sam said to Jake Jake, did you hear that? What? “Sounds like someone is injured and screaming in pain and I hear coyotes yapping. Over there let's go.” They turned the corner and saw a gruesome sight. A man badly wounded was warding off an attack by coyotes. They rushed the coyotes throwing rocks and they backed off. They helped the old man up and asked him what happened. He said, “the invasion happened. The spiders are on the move. They shot me and hundreds of others but I managed to make it here. You had better get going. You don’t want to meet the spiders. “ Jake and Sam helped him to one of the cabins and helped him settle in for the day after doing some first aid. Just then a missile slammed into the cabin next door and drones appeared overhead. The man screamed “Do you hear that? The spiders are coming. You better run.” Sam and Jake ran up the trail but did not encounter the spiders that day. Author note from the opening chapter of my unpublished novel, “Giant Nazi Spiders.” |
