Sam Adams lived in Bangkok, Thailand as a retired US military special forces operative. He was fluent in Thai and Vietnamese and had been living in Bangkok for a number of years. He had just turned 55. He lived in Soi 26 near the famous Soi Cowboy. He would often drop by his favorite bar, the Cosmos Bar where he would hang out with his favorite barmaid, the wonderful, witty and sexy Khun Lek. Khun Lek ran the bar and was from a town in upcountry near Chaing Ryang, near the Laos Border. .She was 35 years old and never married,

She liked Sam, perhaps loved him, and was amused by his command of Thai, his deep understanding of Thai culture and ways, and that he had taught himself Lao and the Ilsan dialect.. But there was one thing that she did not approve of. She felt that at times he was ignoring her which pissed her off. She would go to Sam and give him his beer and tell him,

“Sam, I am tired of waiting. It is time for you to do the right thing and put a ring on me. Don’t you think?”

Sam always laughed at her. He had no intention of getting married after the disastrous first marriage ended in divorce and two children who hated his ass for having deserted their sainted mother for another woman. Sam followed the other woman to Thailand and then dropped her when she started talking about marriage.

Sam wondered if he would have to do the same thing with Khun Lek. Her constant pleads for him to “don’t ignore me” were getting a bit tiresome. Sam had too many other women in mind in any event. He could not see himself settling down with just one woman, let alone Khun Lek, although truth be told he was growing fond of her and the few nights he had been with her very special and romantic indeed.

One day Sam broke down and in front of the Cosmos Bar regular patrons, Sam Adams stood up and took a knee in front of Khun Lek and said, “Khun Lek, I am not going to ignore you anymore and I can’t ignore my feelings for you. I love you. Let’s get married. คุณเล็ก ฉันจะไม่ละเลยคุณอีกแล้ว ผมรักคุณ. ขอแต่งงาน." Khun lĕk c̄hạn ca mị̀ laley Khun xīk læ̂w p̄hm rạk Khun. K̄hx tæ̀ngngān." And he pulled out a large diamond ring and put it on her. It was the happiest day of Sam Adams life.
