A Christmas Poem
“We’ve seen his eastern star”, they said;
Chaldean learned ones of old.
His jealous rage then Herod fed;
And spun a calculation, cold.

He, stealthy one of evil taste,
Claimed, “I will worship him like you.
Then go and find him with all haste,
And bring me word again. Adieu!!”

They hastened on lead by the star;
And found the home where Christ abode.
We gifts, they’d carried from afar;
To Him, in worship, they bestrode.

Then, warned by God not to return;
Went home, they, on different road.
Then, Herod cried, “And Me they spurn?!!
With whip and goad, ride Soldiers, Ride!”

“Is he a king of royal blood?
In my domain no rivals live!
I’ll nip this challenge in the bud;
All Rachel’s infants she must give.”

Then Joseph, warned in nighttime dream,
Rose swift and took his God-man brood
On frantic trip to Egypt’s beam
And waited word his time had stood.

We cringed at Herod’s childish rage;
A Devil’s thrust to stop God’s plan.
But ‘twas ordained by Scripture’s page;
The hand of God and not of man.

This evil work of wicked man,
He thought he acted on his own.
But God almighty had a plan,
To twist for good man’s strident tone.

And what of us, the gifts they bore;
Gold, frankincense, and myrrh?
They gave us, representing more
His Kingly, Priestly, Propheture.

And, yes, we did those roles foretell.
But then in Egypt, live, they must;
And we became their wares to sell;
Provisions from the God they trust.
