The ripples of a passing craft
rock me gently, fore and aft,
as I’m suspended - far from crowds -
between the river and the clouds.
The heat of summer fades away
as, just above, the songbirds play
delighting in their dance of flight,
their wings bright flashes in the light.
A copse of cattails now appear
and from its shadows, I can hear
the sounds of nature’s melody,
a song of gentle harmony.
Time is suspended, as I drift.
This quiet moment is a gift;
a pause from all the cares of life
with its noises and its strife.
Too soon, it seems, the setting sun
announces that the day is done
and as I watch darkness intrude
so ends my moment’s interlude.
