I was facing a triple bypass. My heart had a blockage that had to be removed. I was in the Pittsburgh VAMC when it took place. The priest came by to see me. I was a believer but was not Catholic. I told him I was not Catholic but that I was a Christian. He asked if he could give me "last rites" because by all intents and purposes I would be temporarily and clinically dead. I thought that was the most loving thing he could have done. It impressed the meaning of 'going the extra mile" upon me.
I went on to be confirmed Catholic and he was the priest who heard my second confession. I still do not practice the Catholic faith as I am a Protestant chaplain. However, a Catholic priest showed me true love.
