Don’t Tell

“Don’t tell them anything.”

“Nothing?”

“Not a thing. That’s what nothing means.”

“So I can’t tell you where I hid it.”

“Hid what?”

“You know.”

“What?”

“I can’t tell you. I can’t tell you anything.”

“You can tell me. I’m the boss.”

Jerry looked at George.

“Nope, can’t tell you. You might be the enemy.”

“Oh, for pity’s sake. I’m the one that told you ‘Don’t tell them anything’.”

George and Jerry ate their soup, chewed their bread.

Finally George again said, “What did you hide? You can tell me. It might be what we’ve been looking for.”

“If I tell you, I’ll have to kill you. That’s the deal, remember?”

George frowned.

“Jerry, again remember I’m the boss. You can tell me.”

“How do I know you’re not a spy and are trying to trick me?”

“I guess you’ll just have to trust me. Do you trust me?”

Jerry surveyed George’s face.

“You do have an honest face, but a good spy can be a good actor. Nope, if I tell you then I have to kill you. I don’t want to kill you, George.”

“Fine, but you know I’ll find out eventually.” George left the lunch room.

Jerry finished his lunch, went back to the work room. There were formulae to compute, reports to file, little tasks to complete before the end of day. The final job was done and buried in the back yard of his house after he left the office.

“I guess you’ll now find out what’s buried out here, George,” Jerry said to the dirt as he wiped his hands on a rag. He walked home under the light of ‘simmer dim’.
