A love story
"The Train Left the Station"

The train departs at midnight :01.
Running to catch up to you,
I stumbled.

A fortnight ago, all seemed well with wedding plans.
Daisies in bloom punctuated my happiness;
A bouquet soon to be picked.

Two bands forged in silver;
Securely tucked inside a folded white handkerchief
Embroidered with a floral design
Of 'forget-me-nots'.

Our fairy tale of wedded bliss
Expected to be told and retold
Through generations of families yet to be born.

Typical fairy tales have an antagonist.
A sinister character enters this story to disrupt and destroy.
Dark clouds of lies and threats blackened future endeavors.
Doubts pierced confidence and esteem.
Security evaporated into the darkness
Of short days and long nights.

Distress and disconnect ensued.
Where upon, a note in your script was left behind.
Few words telling of your leaving.
"The train departs at midnight :01",
You wrote.

In my hurry to catch up to you,
I stumbled on the cobblestones at the stroke of midnight.
The whistle blew, gears screeched, clanking of wheels on rails
Indicated the train was pulling away from the station
At 12:01 A.M.

My tear soaked face,
Trembling legs bent in despair,
And thoughts of all hope seemed lost with the departing train.

I turned to return home resigned to be alone.
There behind me in a soft yellow haze,
Under the depot's lamp light,
You stood with open arms.
