Silence was everywhere that winter. The winter monster could hear us, so we took a vow of silence. Old Man Winter blew his worst at us. He sent Blizzards to visit us weekly. He bent the trees with Wind. He yelled at us. He beat on our doors. He rattled the windows. He sent Snow to sift between the cracks we couldn’t see. He tried hard to get into our house.
Stuck inside, we huddled in the kitchen. Conversations were held on the computer. Emails went back and forth. Life reduced to meals, games on mute, yes or no emojis. Sleeping bags were on the floor in front of the fire to keep us warm.
Silence was everywhere that winter. It surrounded us. It kept us safe. It kept Old Man Winter away from our sanctuary. We counted off the days on the refrigerator calendar, days until Sun melts Old Man Winter and sends him back North.
