Confronting autism in a Pantoum poem
Every one of us is unique,
but some stand out among the crowd
when their frustration makes them shriek,
which draws concern with shouts so loud.

Yes, some stand out among the crowd,
because they cannot communicate
and draw concern with shouts so loud,
casting rage at their troubled state.

Because they cannot communicate,
they withdraw into private sphere,
trying to cope with that troubled state,
approaching life on new frontier.

They withdraw into private sphere,
while parents try to understand
approaching life on new frontier
means navigating Wonderland.

While parents try to understand
what their precious lambs require
means navigating Wonderland,
emotional maze packed with brier.

The thing their precious lambs require,
while racing back and forth, here and there,
is emotional zone free from brier,
with their own particular flair.

While racing back and forth, here and there,
they try to maintain same routine
with their own particular flair,
like some manic motion machine.

We try to maintain some routine,
always haunted by mystic phantom,
like some manic motion machine,
always on alert for random tantrum.

We are haunted by mystic phantom,
on pins and needles in their presence,
always on alert for random tantrum
within the core of human essence.

On pins and needles in their presence,
we know they disrupt our habitat
but remain the core of human essence.
We must always remember that.

Even though they disrupt our habitat
and their frustration makes them shriek,
we must always remember that
every one of us is unique.
