Adrian Tuscano has just learned that he was adopted. The man he always believed to be his elderly father, is actually his great uncle. After being baptized on his sixteen birthday in Sicily, his great uncle breaks the news back in their hotel. Upset, and feeling betrayed, Adrian refuses to talk to his family during the long plane ride back to Texas. At home, his great uncle pulls out several ancient journals and begins his story.

His story starts out in December of 1904. Sixteen-year-old, Theodore O'Connor boards the Orphan Train with his three younger brothers. They're on their way to a small town in Texas to be servants for a wealthy man. Their parents have recently passed away, and they've spent the last two months in an orphanage for young boys until they were adopted for the sole purpose of being laborers. Theodore made a vow to his mama that he would keep his brothers together, but what's going to happen when his secret is discovered?

Catrina Mueller is dreading the holidays. As the only daughter of the richest man in town, she rebelled two years ago and married a sharecropper's son. Her father eventually welcomed the man into his family, purchased the couple a new home, and secured his son-in-law a job as the new owner of his tree nursery. Catrina seems to have it all: a wonderful husband, a powerful family, a teaching position, but all she wants is a child of her own, especially a daughter. She knows with her family secrets, it would be impossible. When a strange train pulls into town one morning, she witnesses something that disgusts her, as well as her husband. A maternal instinct she never knew takes over, and she ends up rescuing four boys from a terrible situation. But, they're to be returned after the holidays and begin their lives as servants.

Can Catrina and her husband protect the boys from their adopted father? Will her family secrets prevent her from getting what she wants? And, just what secret is the oldest boy hiding?

Skeletons in the Attic is a family saga that starts after the Civil War, takes you through poverty in Brooklyn, high society in a small Texas town, to a dangerous prison in Sicily, and ending in the late 1960s. It is told in the first and third person via journal entries.
