3/28/19 Daily Flash Fiction Challenge

“We have to hide!” Sammie ducked behind a bush just as a light beamed down only yards away from where she and her brother, William, had stood on the road seconds ago. That was close. But Randy and Shayla hadn’t been too far behind. Had they made it past the light?

Sammie peered through the sparse gaps in the brambles but with no luck. All she could see was the light. There was a commotion out on the road. In the midst of feet crunching and sliding in the gravel, she heard Shayla scream. There was a grunt as someone, Randy by the sound of the thud, fell to the ground. Then, silence. Now, there was no one else left. Just her and Will.

“Listen,” Will whispered, “You have to do what I say. I’ll distract them. You make a run for the house. You’re safe there.”

“They’ll get you, Will. They’ll get you!” Sammie’s panicked voice was heightening and on the verge of getting them caught before they’d had a chance to pull off Will’s plan. Will slapped his hand over Sammie’s mouth and he motioned for her to be quiet.

“On three. Okay?”

Sammie shook her head wildly. She wasn’t ready. She didn’t want to be alone. The dark was scary, but the light was scarier.

“One. Two. Three!” Will leapt out from behind the bush and took off toward the road and the light. He was heading right for the beam.

Sammie waited a second, then somehow got her legs to run. She forgot all about being alone. Just as she jumped to the porch, she yelled, “Safe!” She heard laughing behind her. She turned around and saw all her friends standing under the street light. She had won. Victor of hide and seek in the dark.
