What School Would Jonny Go To?

"Why agonize over this?" Carol asked.

"Just want to make the right decision," I replied.

"What Julie wants," Mary snickered, "is to find out where Jonny's going."

Well, true. But no laughing matter.

Jonny had been offered basketball scholarships from all over the country.

"Bob says they've narrowed it down to two schools," Mary said

"Which ones," I quickly asked. Bob, Mary's brother, and Jonny were forwards on our State Champion basketball team.

"They're going to make the choice together," Mary responded, "to play college ball for the same team."

"WHAT ARE THE TWO SCHOOLS?"

"State," Mary answered, "and sadly UCLA."

"What's the problem?" Carol asked. "Julie's GPA and SAT's are good enough."

"My Mom would have a cow about going cross country to UCLA," I responded.

"Oh," Carol said thoughtfully, adding, "We'll just have to help the boys avoid making a mistake. My cousin from LA can help."

"Your cousin?" I asked.

Even after much whispering, Carol's plan sounded flakey, but better than nothing.

We spread the word; "Big party at Carol's Friday night." Bob and Jonny were early arrivals.

Carol walked in with a 6' 5" guy who we'd all seen on TV playing for State.

"Hi, I'd like you to meet my cousin Mike," Carol introduced him. "Mike's from LA."

"LA?" Jonny asked, "I thought you played for State."

"Oh I do," Mike said, "UCLA wanted me, but I didn't want them. Too hot, too smoggy, and the women are too stuck up."

"Interesting," Bob and Jonny said at the same time. "We're going to visit your campus next week."

'I'll introduce you to coach," Mike said with a big smile.

As he left, Mike whispered to Carol, "Thanks for letting me play your cousin. Those guys will really help the team."
