My submission
It wasn't so much that fact that his school had a reunion, but the fact that he went that pissed Brian off so much. Throughout high school Brian told himself over and over that once he graduated, that was it, he was never going back. Especially after that one night during senior year.
But now, ten years older and feeling just like the idiot he always had, Brian was sucked up into attending the high school reunion. A little over half the kids from his grade had shown up and he could barely remember the names of half the students who bothered to come.
Against better judgement telling Brian to just throw away the festive name tag and walk out the building for good, he made small talk with his old lab partner. Mr. Lab Partner, Brian was quite honestly forgetting the poor guy's name, was the only other person who looked as miserable there as Brian.
While the rest of the grade danced to the out-of-date music and ate what tasted like out-of-date food, Mr. Lab Partner spoke something of interest to Brian. A real chance to get away, and maybe this time he wouldn’t continue to feel connected to his old life.
Brain hadn’t been able to move on since high school. He’d lived in the same town and worked in the same company since he was 18. More trying was the emotional connection that that one night from school had brought him senior year. The proposed chance was out of state working with Mr. Lab Partner in his new and blossoming field. Oddly enough Brian finally felt fulfilled from his high school. He wondered if he’d come back to the next reunion. If he needed to anymore, or if this had been enough to set him free.
