World War One battlefield, Fear personified like never before. |
Fear I surround the field in a translucent weight, Spreading through organ and limb like a cancer, Killing off spirit and fuelling the battle. I scatter and Slither along trench walls, A poison awaiting each victim in stealth, These victims aren’t few, but are many. Hunt me, but to no ends will you find I cannot be heard, touched or tasted, Only in emotion can I claim to be. A tidal wave crashing down on the soul of man, For each suffers his own, and none can escape, Like a cage, impenetrable, and under lock and key. I cover the world in a veil of misery, Preying on the weak and corrupting the strong, Attacking minds but leaving their bodies in tact. The hands shake and the legs are unsteady, Being struck one by one, each sense falters, Enemies become friends and friends enemies. I hover above like a vulture eyeing dead flesh, Smelling blood as it pumps through rich veins, Feeding the heart which will falter and fail. The smell of sick and death lingers on the air, Breaking the courage of pride and visions of home, These men did not know that this hour is mine. I parade the dead and cover them in a rage of fog, I have no control over them now and no tears will I shed, I will move on and find a fresh batch of living instead. |
