How I think we may have got here.
THE ALTERNATIVE THEORY.

There were a time that whiled away unrecognised by man
between, when dinosaurs became extinct and human kind began
This middle time when-by the World in all its infancy
lay pure and green and innocent for all the stars to see

When upon this small blue planet hanging aimlessly in space
there lit a tiny shiny craft and a small an hairy race
The race were known as whimsy, though not at all as their name implies
most were scholars and scientists they’d never heard of lies

They were rather short 'n' plump with yellow noses hairy feet
their ears were large by comparison to their eyes quite small and neat
They came in mostly earthen tones of brown and tan and fawn
they wore jewellery made of cabbages 'n' radishes and corn

They mostly ate three times their weight for breakfast more for lunch
all through the day a mile away one could hear them slurp 'n' crunch
But eat was not their only chore they worked toward the day
for time was of the essence soon they must be on their way

They farmed and studied making notes preparing mother earth
for soon they knew would come the day of the all important birth
The birth of course in question should really be defined
as the moment you and I appeared the birth of all mankind

Then came the day when all the parts were finally in place
the Whimsy climbed aboard their craft and headed into space
In search of planets distant to like Mother Earth prepare
in order life should flourish cross the cosmos far and near

To us, they left a gift of such incalculable worth
for now the sound of children playing echoed round the earth
And as the tiny shiny craft shoots off amongst the stars
there's some that claim this tale is stretched but none to say how far.
