Flash fiction for 6/2 Keywords: Stripes Thread Necklace (word count 299)
Amber played with her necklace as she sat next to the stone age rotary phone on a table in her aunt's hallway. The thing should be in a museum, she thought and it galled her to have to rely on it. Aunt Miriam's house was the one place in the whole world that got no cell service. At first it had been fun to thread her fingers into the coiled cord but that novelty had worn off long ago.

No cell phone, no internet, Aunt Miriam doesn't even have a microwave. How did people live like this?

She absentmindedly doodled as she waited, she wasn't going to miss Ritchie's call for anything. Today was their two month anniversary. It was bad enough that she was stuck out here in the sticks on this day just because her parents felt she needed to build some character. The ladybug necklace she wore had been a gift from Ritchie for their anniversary last month. It was a cheap thing he had gotten from a capsule machine but she treasured it

Aunt Miriam came in from the garden and saw Amber waiting still. "Nothing still? Didn't you say that boy was going out with another girl when he asked you out?"

"So? He never loved Jennifer like he loves me." Amber said defensively.

"Oh pumpkin take it from your Auntie; a tiger can't change it's stripes and boys at your age don't know what they want. I know how it is."

"You don't know Ritchie." she protested but there were tears in her eyes.

"Maybe, maybe not. Why don't you come help with supper? I'll show you how to make those rolls you like."

Amber hesitated for a moment then stood up. She couldn't wait anymore.

Later she didn't hear the phone ring.
