Flash Fiction: 299 Words: Silver, lead, box |
This was finally it! Agatha had been waiting her whole life for this moment, from the time she was a little girl sitting at her grandmother’s feet she had dreamed of it every night. When Agatha was a child her family would hide away at night from the evils that lurked in the cruel, dark world. During these times of hiding, to lift the spirits of everyone in the family, her grandmother would tell stories of a magical box with a single silver leaf from an olive branch. It was said that the leaf was plucked from the branch that the dove delivered to Noah after the great flood and locked away for safe keeping all these years. To protect the leaf from decay, they coated it in silver and attached it to a silver box so that it wouldn’t get lost. But as time went on, the box was passed from person to person so frequently that the story was lost, and so was the box. For hundreds of years, the world grew darker and crueler every minute. People killing people, stealing from people, wars that seemed to be never ending, terror attacks, virus and various other evils that existed in the world only got worse with time. Now, Agatha was standing only inches away for the box with the sacred silver leaf that she had been searching for for the last 20 years of her life. According to the story, only a person with purely good intentions could open the box to save the world. Agatha didn’t know if she could do it but she had to try. She stepped forward and with both hands slowly opened the box. When the box was open it revealed a single piece of paper that said, “Love One Another.” |
